Can I get a cost estimate before medical care?

The real answer

Yes: when you ask, most plans must give you an estimate of your share for a covered service before you get it, online or on paper (45 CFR 147.211), and must publish their in-network contract rates in public files anyone may read (45 CFR 147.212), under the Affordable Care Act (42 U.S.C. §§ 300gg-15a and 18031(e)(3)). If you have no insurance or pay for care yourself, the provider owes you a good faith estimate before scheduled care (42 U.S.C. § 300gg-136; 45 CFR 149.610).
