When was leaded gasoline banned?

The real answer

In the United States it has been unlawful since the end of 1995 to sell gasoline that contains lead for use in cars or any other motor vehicle (42 U.S.C. § 7545(n)).

The rest of the world followed: the last service stations to sell it stopped in July 2021, ending an additive used since 1922. Leaded petrol causes heart disease, stroke and cancer, and harms the development of children’s brains (the UN Environment Programme).

The house’s version

Observe: leaded gasoline, from the same man who gave us the refrigerant. It made engines run smoothly and put lead in the air, the dust, the soil and the children. It sold for the better part of a century: this country stopped selling it for cars at the end of 1995, and the last of the world in 2021. The family has never once run out of gas.
